With the class, brainstorm the positive and negative effects of modern technology. Discuss which have had the most influence on the students’ lives. Ask students for examples of technology and explain that, while many people use the term to refer to modern electronic technology, it includes all forms of tools and inventions. Have students list some technologies they use that have been in use for many years. The best invention ever: Brainstorm with students a list of 10-20 inventions that they think are the best ever. Then have each student choose one of the inventions, and explain to the class why that invention was the best one ever invented. Have students write a diary entry or draw a picture of a young person growing up in an era without modern  technology.

Technology link: Have students write a journal entry as an explorer from an advanced future civilization that visits Earth in 2004 and sees the technology that we use as primitive. Encourage them to be creative.
