Activities

1. Recap and Expectations (5 min)

• Ask students to recap what they learned last week and remind them of the expectations laid out in week one.

Project the Week Five Slideshow and go through the slides as you go through each activity.

2. Review of Market Research and Prototypes (20 min)

• Allow the students to present and discuss their market research findings and their prototypes. Some students will have conflicting reviews of the product/service, help guide them through a discussion to find the most pertinent information for improving their idea.

3. SMART Goals (15 min)

• Remind students about the SMART goals used earlier in the program, and ask them to recap how a SMART goal works.  Discuss with them what changes and developments they can make to their product/ service and Lean Business Plan in the time remaining in the program to ensure they have developed the best possible product. Remind students that they will be pitching their product as a group next week.

4. Adapting Prototype and Lean Business Plan (35 min)

• Allow the students to work on adapting their prototype and Lean Business Plan to reflect the market research they conducted. Instruct them that by the end of this time period they must have their product and business plan prepared to a point that they are ready to develop a pitch.

5. Final Pitch Development (40 min)

• The students will now have the remainder of the session to work on developing a final pitch (or business plan). As a wrap-up to the program the students will be pitching their idea at the end of their last meeting.

• Each group will have 5 minutes to present and can be asked questions following the presentation.

• Groups are welcome to use props and slides if the technology in your space allows. We strongly encourage students to prepare a slide deck (example: PowerPoint). A maximum of 10 slides can be used.

• Instruct students that they will have some additional time to fine tune their pitch the following week but encourage them to meet outside of the program to rehearse.

• Teachers will be asked to mark the students on their pitch using the Final Pitch Evaluation Form from week six materials which can be provided to the students in advance.

6. Wrap-Up (5 min)

• Remind the students that they will be presenting a final pitch next week. Encourage them to meet with the group throughout the week to rehearse.

• Optional: you may wish to give more time for students to work on their Lean Business Plans in class as this is due to JA at the end of the program for preliminary judging. If you choose to do this, part of weeks 5 & 6 can be used for the lean business plan completion. Then, plan to have student pitches in week 7 or 8 after submissions of the Lean Business Plan are complete.
